Grodt class cruisers aren´t the most powerful ships in STNE, but what they lack in weapons strength, hull and shielding is made up by weaponry diversity, speed, a decently sized cargo bay and bussard collectors that allow it to stay near enemy space for long periods of time without having to worry about refueling.

Uses

The Grodt class has a variety of uses, originally being Role Play described as transports that could hold off small raiding vessels, over the course of STNE it has become a very popular raiding ship. It´s bussard collectors, although not the best, allow it to hide in Dense Deuterium nebulae for long time periods until it can survive a strike on an enemy planet, go in, beam up any goods it can take, and get out of the area. Its 75 flight range allows it to outrun most dedicated warships. The ships polaron beams allow it to disable beam protection buildings with relative ease and can put up a reasonable defense against fighters, while its torpedo capabilities allow it to shred apart most vessels capable of chasing it effectively in the first tick after battle. After that it´s large flight range allows it to outrun most light fighting vessels by twenty sectors a tick.

Pros

Grodt´s large flight range allows them to reach a target more quickly than warship fleets or interception fleets. The Grodt bussard collectors can fuel the vessels for a long time during a chase. It´s cargo bay is much larger than the average combat ship´s, so it can carry a much larger bounty when raiding an opponent. Their high flight range allows them to outrun almost every ship, only other Grodts or Nausicaans have sufficient weaponry and flight range to catch and destroy grodt class vessels assuming no ships are using overdrive, items or science avatars. In large fleets they can hold off a small squad of light warships, lone heavy warships and their Polaron Beams allow them to destroy fighters when they are getting between the Grodts and a target.

Cons

The main downside of the Grodt class ship is its high slot cost, while its weaponry is similar to that of a 2 slot adrec (with the additional advantage of being able to target fighters), it uses the same slots as a Bandari while being able to do about 40% less damage each battletick and being much easier to kill - however the grodt is not designed for heavy combat situations so used properly as a raiding vessel this should not be a major issue.

The other main disadvantage of the Grodt is its reliance on torpedoes in battle, while it does have its Polaron Beams these are almost useless against shielded ships, meaning a Grodt class ship with no torpedoes is an easy target - for this reason it may be logical to use a combined fleet of Grodts and Nausicaans, as the ion disruptor on the nausicaan is specifically designed to destroy shields.

Also although grodts have high flight range and can outrun most ships, this is of limited use if raiding someone surrounded by allies, as it is likely that even after a ticks movement the grodt would still be in enemy space and the alliance would probably have a fleet in range to attack it.
