The Vinculum is the most important part of a Borg ship and is highly prized as salvage.

The Borg are formidable enemies. Their powerful ships, though lacking in imagination, have a massive armour and weapon capabilities. At the heart of these ships are vinculums. This 'central computer' controls the ship, engines, weapons, shields, and of course connects said ship to the hive mind.

There are no uses for vinculums other than collection or trade. A single vinculum came on-board each Borg ship in the christmas period auctions
