DY-500 Colonisation /Transport Ship

The DY-500 Class is the first ship you recieve at the start of the game. It is essential for colonising planets and in some ways is the most important ship in the game. If the ship is destroyed and you have used less than 25 ship slots, a new DY-500 Class Ship can be requested from the Federation, alternatively if you have too many slots to request one of the federation you can build a DY-500 class in a shipyard. DY-500 class ships cannot be bought/sold on the Talaxian Ship Auctions. It is only possible to have one DY-500 at a time.

Colonisation

To colonize an M-Class, moderate or water colony, you need the following on board:

3.gif 20 Plasteel

This will create a Base Camp on the planet, you must beam down crew to begin populating the planet. Unfortunatly base camps cannot be built on other planet types or asteroids so therefore if you wish to colonize one of these you will need:

3.gif 40 Plasteel

5.gif 20 Duranium

This will create a Headquarters on the planet/asteroid

Defences

The DY-500 is not designed as a military ship so therefore it only has limited defences, just enough to hold off fighters. When you first set up your colonies your DY-500 will be your most powerful ship until you build a Fighter Prototype. Compared to other civilian ships the DY-500 has a reasonable hull strength and its 2 Armor is a good defence from the weak phasers on other civilian type ships.

Other Uses

When the DY-500 is not being used for colonisation there are a number of other useful jobs it can do. Often when setting up your colonies the AntaresB and Whorfin class vessels that you are supplied with by the federation may not be enough to transport all of your goods with. The DY-500 is not as good as these specialist transport ships as it has a smaller cargo bay but its reasonable flight range and low flight cost can make it good for transporting goods long distances. Many colonists also like to use this ship class to collect deuterium, its 300 Bussard Collector Capacity when taking up only one slot make it the most efficient colonist deuterium colector avalible - even more efficient than credit ships like the Rigel. In a dense deuterium nebula the DY-500 can collect up to 360 deuterium per tick making it part of most colonists deuterium collection operations
