The Grodt class cruisers aren´t the most powerful ships in the game, but what they lack in weapons strength, hull and shielding is made up by weaponry diversity, speed, a decently sized cargo bay and bussard collectors that allow it to hang near enemy space for long periods of time without having to worry about refueling.

Uses

The Grodt class has a variety of uses, originally being Role Play described as transports that could hold off small raiding vessels, over the course of STNE it has become a very popular raiding ship. It´s bussard collectors, although not the best, allow it to hide in Dense Deuterium nebulae for long time periods until it can survive a strike on an enemy planet, go in, beam up any goods it can take, and get out of the area. Although it´s speed isn´t that much greater than that of a Darinaya or Kazon, it can easily outrun any of the heavier warships, with its Phasers being able to slaughter fighters in its path and its lightweight Disruptors being able to shred apart most vessels capable of chasing it effectively in the first tick after battle. After that it´s large flight range allows it to outrun most light fighting vessels by two sectors a tick.

Pros

Grodt´s large flight range allows them to reach a target more quickly than warship fleets or interception fleets. The Grodt bussard collectors can fuel the vessels for a long time during a chase. It´s cargo bay is much larger than the average combat ship´s, so it can carry a much larger bounty when raiding an opponent. They can outrun everything except some civilian vessels, the less powerful Nausicaans, and the Elstar Class Flagship. In large fleets they can hold off a small squad of light warships, lone heavy warships and their Phasers allow them to destroy fighters when they are getting between the Grodts and a target.

Cons

If a lone Grodt launches a small raid, but a fleet of Nausicaans or Credit Ships go after it, the Grodt will be caught due to those ship´s even higher speeds. The Grodt also has low shields and hull compared to many warships, and is more comparable to a downgraded light warship. Large fleets of fighters can overcome the Grodt´s phasers, and heavy warships can easily beat Grodt´s if they can corner them. On top of all of this, if the Grodt´s opponent has a nearby Elstar Class Flagship, that vessel can overtake the Grodts and destroy them with relative ease due to its vastly superior Flight Range. Grodts can only take on defenses in large numbers, if the defense is designed to expect invasion, they can generally take out the Grodts which are more aimed at using Phasers against fighters, Disruptors against light opponenets and torpedoes for planetary bombardment, preventing the Grodt from being classified as a warship and simply a cruiser.
