Population listed as unemployed () provide no current benefit to a colony, yet still consume food.
It is relatively difficult to have exactly as many colonists as workers needed. Thus, a colony will often have a 'surplus' population of unemployed colonists. It is therefore recommended that Nature Preserves be created in order to provide the unemployed with productive work as Environmentalists. Assigning the unemployed as Scientists, Holodeck Operators, and Soldiers are other potential uses for the unemployed. It always depends upon the particular needs of a colony.
