The colonists' basic military capital ship, the Aither-class light carrier has moderate defenses for a ship of its size. During the early colonist era, the Aither proved to be a symbol of might and power. However, its impressive shield grid and armour are set back by its mediocre weapons array. Although an Aither can easily triumph over the most basic militaries, it is generally ineffective against anyone with more than a few light frigates. The Aither makes up for this shortcoming with its ability to carry 14 fighters as escort. However, its lack of disruptors, weak phaser output and the susceptibility of its fighter escorts to corvettes leave it prey to more sophisticated fleets. While it is capable of planetary bombardment, it does not last very long against dedicated orbital defenses. Regardless of these weaknesses, the Aither remains a popular choice of capital ship for new colonial governments. In the modern age, it is not uncommon to see fleets of four to eight Aithers alongside NPC-Auction ships and colonist Iowas. Their flight range of 55 allows them to cruise across vast distances and deliver a killer blow with a swarm of fighters.
