The Final Plan for Removing Latinum
Dear All,
Firstly, I just wanted to thank everyone in the community who posted in the latinum channel. It was great to see so many on the server engage with both the admin team & fellow players to discuss what was inevitably going to be a very divisive issue. I really appreciate your input not only on the latinum issue, but your ideas for the game beyond that - the development team and myself have been keeping up with everyone's posts on the channel.
I spoke to the development team this morning about the ideas & proposals for phasing out latinum. As previously discussed, there will be no replacement of the latinum system but we did want feedback on the proposed system for how it would be removed.
Just as a reminder, the development team want latinum removed because it is an aberration from the intended mechanics of STNE. The game is designed for all resources to be stored by players, transported manually by players & within that system players are not meant to be able to store vast quantities of resources in reserve and then tap into that whenever they require. Going forward, we encourage players & alliances to develop infrastructure for increased resource storage, either using ship or colony slots - this is as STNE was intended to be, and the system we are aiming to return to with the changes.
Latinum has not been a 'safe' resource to invest in since the first changes were announced in May of last year. Those who had latinum reserves were aware changes would be made & have had some time to consider offloading their latinum stores, though I completely concede the point that these changes were not defined at that time. With the below schedule, the total amount of time that latinum has been under review & being changed will be 18 months. Our hope is that the below schedule will allow players to shift their existing stores of latinum, but the development team are very clear that there must be an end date in sight for latinum and that this issue has gone on long enough.
Although there were some great ideas and enthusiasm in the discussion channel, it has also been decided by the development team that an event by which latinum is exchanged for ships or items will not be feasible. First and foremost, the prizes would be mainly accessible only by those few players who currently hold large stores of latinum, and secondly there would need to be parity across all servers (we could not hold an event only on EN1 with special ships, because it would not be fair to those playing on other servers). Because of the large differences between servers in regards to latinum, it would not be possible to keep this fair.
Schedule:
With the above in mind, we will proceed with the originally announced system of latinum being gradually devalued over time, until it is rendered worthless and removed from the server.
- On the first tick of the 15th of March, latinum will be devalued by 10% of it's original value.
- On the first tick of the 15th of every month afterward, latinum will be devalued by 10% of it's original value.
- On the 15th of November, latinum will be completely removed from the server as the 2020 Christmas Event begins.
- Ferengi will exchange latinum for all resources as normal during this period, but no further latinum will be sold.
The value of latinum over time will be as follows:
15th March - 90% original value 15th April - 80% original value 15th May - 70% original value 15th June - 60% original value 15th July - 50% original value 15th August - 40% original value 15th September - 30% original value 15th October - 20% original value 15th November - LATINUM REMOVED
Further changes to the Ferengi trading system will be announced in due course, but these will not take effect until latinum is phased out completely - these changes will be announced in time for the start of the 2020 Christmas Event.
We're aware that for some on the server, this will represent a significant gameplay style change, whilst for others it will make no difference at all. I want to stress that my door is always open to discuss these changes, as well as how things might work on the server in the future. Please feel free to query me or find me on Discord any time, and I would be happy to chat to you.
Please also watch out for some events that the admin team will be running going forward! Everyone will have the chance to participate, and my hope is that combined with the excellent work of our very active NPC team we can keep everyone entertained for many years to come.
Thank you.
Kind Regards, [ADMIN] TRESKA
