Self-sufficiency designates a unit (colony or ship) in STNE which produces everything it needs to function, i.e. it is completely independent of supply requirements from the outside. This corresponds to autark on the German STNE servers.
In order to be self-sufficient, ships require a Ship's Replicator in order to produce food from energy. Additionally, they need either Bussard Collectors or Ship's Solar Collectors to collect energy independently.
Self-sufficient colonies produce the food their population requires through their production facilities. The needs of their manufacturing plants are fulfilled by local mines.
