Introduction
Soldiers are used to make revolting colonists work. They oppress the population, though increase production potential by providing more available workers. Every soldier will force ten colonists to work, including colonists who are revolting; soldiers are generally used to stop a revolt from disrupting production. Holodeck operators are an alternative to soldiers, though they only satisfy five workers; you, therefore, need more holodeck operators to stop a revolt than soldiers.
Negative Impact
Despite the usefulness of soldiers, they do have drawbacks. Every soldier will cost a colonist 2 internal reputation per tick. This is somewhat ironic, as the lower your internal reputation, the less satisfied your workers will be; therefore, more revolts occur, and more soldiers are needed.
Additional Notes
Soldiers cannot become dissatisfied once they are assigned as soldiers; you will, therefore, never have soldiers leave their posts to join a revolt.
In order to assign a soldier, you must have at least one unemployed colonist.
One can assign a soldier by going to the colony surface screen, pressing "Colony settings", and assigning the desired number of soldiers.
