There are a variety of Colony Planners available for use in designing colonies for STNE, giving users the ability to simulate colonies without affecting the actual game, allowing them to find the optimal colony set up needed, thereby maximising production for the level of imports they want.

The Official Ingame Colony Planner

Settlers up to level 7 can use the full functionality of the official in game colony planner, however once a settler reaches level 8 they can only use the planner for up to 2 colonies and cannot include level 8 buildings unless they have purchased the feature pack. This factor - along with the fact it is very time consuming to build colonies using it - generally causes the official planner to be less popular than other unofficial alternative colony planners, however it does have a number of features external planners lack, for example the ability to copy existing colonies and also the ability to adjust torpedo factories to produce polaron, nemesis and EMP torpedoes, something not available in any external planner

Using the Colony Planner

To access the colony planner, go to the help menu then click on Simulated Colony Planner, alternatively you can select colony planner on the colony screen. Once you have done this click Create new colony this should then give you the option to choose the colony you wish to design. Once you've selected your colony type you ahead and start making a plan!

LKKP Colony Planner

The LKKP Colony Planner (abbreviated from the German Laijane und kui Kolonieplaner) is a popular external colony planner designed to work offline on Windows PCs, it can also be ran in linux using the Wine Compatibility Layer and while untested can probably work on Mac OS using either wine or CrossOver software.

The planner has some features not included in the internal planner, such as calculating and displaying build costs for the colony and allows users to save plans as KPLS files, allowing for an unlimited amount of plans to be saved, unlike the ingame colony planner which limits users to the amount of colonies they actually have ingame.

However the source code to the software has been lost meaning official development of the software has stopped although small edits have been made to the data files allowing for some later ingame updates to be included. Despite this a large number of updates have not been included meaning the planner does not allow construction of Disruptor Batteries or Phase Mutators and does not allow for Torpedo Factories to produce polaron, nemesis or EMP torpedoes.

Wosemo's Colony Planner

An online javascript based colony planner which is in active development, the planner supports all the latest updates and is available in both English and German. Since it is browser based it can ran on any system and allows an unlimited quantity of plans to be saved onto the website, either publicly or privately. The planner does lack the ability to produce polaron, nemesis and EMP torpedoes but does not lack any other features.
