Atmospheric Density is the value which determines how much phaser shots are weakened when attacking a planets surface. So if for example a ship with 1x4 phaser attacks a planet with an atmospheric density of 2 (For example a Desert Planet), then the building (assuming it has no armour) takes 2 damage. This only applies to fields on the planet, not those in orbit. The Atmospheric density has no effect when attacking a planet with Torpedoes or if using a Missile Type A
