Craters can be created by terraforming Rock. There can be 6 Craters on Small Asteroid Fields, with 3 naturally occurring, 8 on Large Asteroid Fields (naturally 4), and 10 on Rock Planets (naturally 8). Each Crater takes 10 Photon Torpedoes and 1 tick to Terraform, and requires Global Blasting Research.
A practical joke by early asteroid settlers, involving active photon torpedoes, resulted in large craters, which could not be used for any type of industrial production. It was discovered, however, that the resulting radiation could be harnessed and converted into energy with very little effort.'.
