Tribbles are fascinating creatures. They can eat their entire weight in food in a matter of minutes. They can decimate a colony's food supply in a matter of days or less depending on the amount of food and the number of tribbles involved. As such, colonists generally do not like it when you drop them off on one of their planets or ships.
If you drop off the animals at any colony the person on the receiving end will no doubt shower you in torpedoes.
1 tribble + 1 food = 7 tribbles per Tick
As such, they make excellent bio-weapons. They either starve the enemy colony out or they clog it up and make it useless. Hoarding these creatures can get you killed.
